The first day at work is like a book in another language. It's nice, and crisp, and fresh. There's a whole book to read and savour. Yet, before you start on it, you have to learn a whole new language.

Impress your boss

Every office works differently. And as a new employee, you have get used to the picquancies and peculiarities of your new workplace. Perhaps, most frighteningly of all, there's that new boss to manage. It might seem unnerving at first. But, then, in order to move ahead in your career, you need to get right up on your feet, and be ready to start at the word "go".

 

Get this right, and the manager will take a liking for you, and you, my friend, are on the way to corporate greatness!

 

  • Reach on time, or before time. Don't seem like a loafer right frim day one.

  • Dress conservatively until you have got the company culture figured out.

  • Prepare for your first day at work. Go through your set of responsibilities. Read about the company and try to create a mental image of what you will have to do each day.

  • Be friendly with everyone on the way – from the watchman to the receptionist.

  • Be interested in what you are being told.

  • Do not rely solely on memory. Take a notepad, and scribble down notes, as the manager ferries you from department to department.

  • Show interest in finding out more about the functioning of the company.

  • Go beyond the job description and volunteer to take up extra work.

  • Offer meaningful help wherever possible.

  • Ask sensible questions about problems you will face, day to day.

  • Get in touch with your team members and coworkers. Build a rapport right away!
