Do you remember Barney Stimson’s video resume from the popular sit-com “ How I met your Mother”?. Well of course you do , right? ( if you don't Google it right now). Remember how Legendarily he showcased his skills by saying being a perfectionist is his only weakness! Funny right?

But this is not an entirely new concept , video resumes are in practice since 1980' s. According to our very own Wikipedia the definition of a video resume is “ A video resume is a way for job seekers to showcase their abilities beyond the capabilities of a traditional paper resume. The video resume allows prospective employers to see and hear applicants, and get a feel for how applicants present themselves”.

Now for the time being forget about Barney's resume because it was meant to make you laugh, not imitate. But the real concern is if you really want to place your loyalty to this amusingly creative way of showcasing yourself in front of recruiters then you must know how to do it right.

You may consider following points while making one:

  • Dress professionally: as you would have for going to a conventional interview.

  • Make it Right : Don't make it because you can , make it because you want to present yourself in a more creative way.

  • Look at the camera : Don't look around , look at the camera so that the recruiters may feel as if they are watching you talk while maintaining your eye contact. Think about News Readers and your job will be easy.

  • Make it as short as it can be: Make it as short as it can be, because people have loads of other works to do as well.

  • Speak properly: Don't whisper or use fillers ...Please! Speak loud enough so that the viewer can understand each and every word. Wait.. Not in a “Moon Man Language” either..!

  • Make sure there isn't any background noise : It can turn people off if they hear a noise of a hammer within the gap of every 5 seconds!

  • Practice : Practice in front of a mirror or do it in front of the camera as much as you can about things you are going to say .

  • Focus on your professional endeavors: Just the way you don't like fact and fiction combined together to make a mess , no body will like your mix of personal and professional stuff. Talk about yourself putting emphesis on your professional front.

  • Discuss why they should hire you : Tell them how you would be a good employee and what you can do for the company that hires you.

  • Be creative : If done in a proper way it can be a real advantage , so whatever you want to do , do it by spicing it up creatively.

  • Thank the viewer : For their kind attention and patience and let them know how you'd be grateful if you get the job.

  • Edit the video. If the video is not perfect, start over, or edit it to include only good "Takes".

Making a video resume doesn't guaranty that you'll get the job but making a brilliant one will definitely multiply your chances.

Now go and “Suit up” for your Visume..!
