For freshers, an office is a veritable minefield. Forget the fat handbook of company policies (which even the HR department wouldn't have read). Employees spend each day at work negotiating their way through a maze of unwritten codes and unspoken rules.

HR Door

When you enter the corporate workplace for the first time, it all seems daunting and confusing. And none more so, than the prerogative of consulting the HR department.

Yeah, you do know that they are there to sort out Human Resources the company employs. But then, when would it be appropriate to contact HR? And whom do you ask for redressal first: you manager or the HR? Well, let's face it. It's a situation which can cause a debate even amongst the most experienced professionals.

There's just one thing you need to know about reach out to HR. Don't be shy. If you feel that you face an issue, be sure to bring it up. Nevertheless, in order not to seem crabby and obnoxious, we have compiled a short list of situations when it is completely natural (and often required) of you to go to HR.

Harassment, Victimization or Discrimination

If you face problems with a few coworkers or your manager, try to sort it out among yourself. Probably, all you need to do is speak things out in the open. However, if you feel that you are being targetted or victimized, it would be better to put in a word with the HR. This might involve cases of harrassment, or victimization on grounds of gender, race, age, sexuality, disability, ethnicity, religion, political views, etc. In fact, a new legislation allows you to raise a case on someone else's behalf (even if you are not personally affected), if you feel that they have been harassed in this manner.

The Initial Employment Negotiations

The first week or so, you will have to communicate with the HR quite frequently. It is the HR department which has hired you, and they will go through a process of orienting you with the workplace. You will also have to contact them to negotiate personal benefits and entitlements. These would include yearly bonuses, healthcare options, insurance schemes, and much more.

Changes in Personal Circumstances

After you have settled down, you might wish to work things out in a manner more comfortable for yourself. Maybe you wish to have more flexible work timings. Or you have to take a leave on short notice. And maybe even apply for maternity or paternity leave. In these cases, the HR department will be your first port of call. They will liaise with your boss and make things work for everyone.

Find Internal Job Opportunities

Do you see yourself working elsewhere within your company? Have you charted out a career plan which will take you to an executive position in a few years' time? Keep in touch with the HR to find out jobs that open within your company. Also enquire with them about any training or mentoring programs they have at the organizations. And if your friend is looking for a job at your firm, find out at HR for job availabilities. Most companies look to hire personnel through employee referrals.
